
The Silence of Rejection: When Schools Say “No” but Won’t Say Why; A Plea for Transparency

As an advisor, guide, and mentor to parents navigating the high-stakes world of private school admissions, I’ve once again encountered a frustrating—and all-too-common—scenario that leaves me, and many of my clients, fuming. Recently, a client family had applied to a mid-tier private school, investing a not-insubstantial application fee to cover administrative costs and assessments (before engaging us). They poured in time, hope, and money, only to receive a curt, unexplained rejection. When we sought constructive feedback to understand what went wrong, the school stonewalled us, offering nothing beyond a generic “apply again next year” line. It’s maddening—and utterly unhelpful.
These application and assessment fees, often hundreds of Hong Kong dollars, are marketed as a fair exchange for a thorough evaluation process. Parents are customers, and deserve to be treated with respect! Yet, hiding behind a veil of secrecy and refusing to engage isn’t just poor customer service—it’s a disservice to families who crave transparency, especially when a child’s educational future hangs in the balance. A dismissive “thanks, but no thanks” provides no guidance, leaving parents and children adrift.
Private schools, particularly those not in the top tier, rely on families like my clients to sustain their enrollment. With that dependence comes a responsibility to treat us as partners. Offering constructive feedback—such as insights on academic readiness or extracurricular fit—would build trust and loyalty. I’m pleased that most schools I work with do provide this support, recognizing its value. However, for those that don’t, I can’t help but question whether the “character education” they deem essential to teach our children is reflected in their administrative practices. If schools prioritize integrity, empathy, and growth in the classroom, shouldn’t those values extend to how they handle rejections?
This disconnect is especially galling for families who engage consultants such as us to streamline the process. A skilled advisor can demystify admissions, align applications with school expectations, and offer strategic guidance. But when a family applies independently—before seeking support—and faces a school’s refusal to engage, the consultant’s hands are tied. Without feedback, we’re left guessing, unable to tailor future applications effectively. This stonewalling undermines not just parents but the professionals trying to bridge the gap.
The emotional toll is undeniable. Parents feel the sting of rejection acutely, compounded by the uncertainty of not knowing why. For children, it breeds self-doubt—“Am I not good enough?”—with no answers to ease their minds. In a competitive landscape like Hong Kong’s, where exam pressure and parental expectations run high, this lack of transparency only deepens the anxiety. We’re left second-guessing every move, wondering if tutors, enrichment programs, or a complete pivot are the answer.
Parents deserve better—and our children deserve a system that respects their potential, not just its own gatekeeping. Schools that refuse to engage miss a chance to foster loyalty and growth. A brief note such as “We suggest focusing on X next time”—could transform a rejection into a learning opportunity. If administrative burden is the excuse, a simple checklist of decline reasons (e.g., “limited communication skills demontrated,” “unwillingness to complete tasks”) would suffice. It's time for schools to align their practices with the values they preach.
