Preparing for the 2026 Hong Kong Through-School Application Cycle: A Guide for Parents of Children Born 2021–2024
Apr 20, 2025If you’re a parent of a child born between 2021 and 2024, now is the time to start thinking about their educational journey in Hong Kong’s through-school system. The 2026 application cycle is just around the corner, with applications opening as early as 1 May 2025 for some schools, though most will begin accepting applications on 1 September 2025. This process can feel overwhelming, especially with many parents still set on a Year 1 or a Primary 1 start. Yet, Hong Kong’s through-schools offer a seamless transition from kindergarten (PN/K1/K2) to secondary education. But with a bit of preparation, you can approach this milestone with confidence—and I’m here to help.
Why Early Preparation Matters
Hong Kong’s through-schools, such as Canadian International School (CDNIS), Chinese International School (CIS) or Hong Kong International School (HKIS), are highly sought after, not least for an almost guaranteed progression from kindergarten to graduation.
Applications for the 2026–2027 academic year open soon, and while the process might seem straightforward, there are nuances to understand. Missing key deadlines or misunderstanding criteria that will give your child an edge could hamper your child’s success. Starting early gives you time to research schools, attend open houses and gather necessary documents.
The Benefits of Being Ready
Getting a head start doesn’t just reduce stress—it also allows you to make informed decisions. Schools encourage families to explore their offerings through virtual tours, campus visits, and open houses, which can help you determine if their environment suits your child’s needs. For children born between 2021 and 2024, you’re likely looking at entry into K1 (Nursery) or K2 (Reception), depending on their month of birth. ESF, for example, places children in year groups based on their birth year, with K1 starting in the year they turn 3, and they don’t allow early admission. Understanding these policies now ensures you apply for the correct year group.
Also, preparing early lets you explore additional opportunities. Many of these schools offer Summer Programs. Attending a class or two to familiarise your child with the surroundings can be a very good idea!
